Police arrested 22 students of Osmania University (OU) in charge of resort to violence on the campus on Sunday night after a postgraduate student was found hanging in the men's washroom. While nine of them were produced in the Nampally court on Monday, the rest were released with a warning.
The incident took place on Sunday when E Murali, a physics topper, was found hanging in the Maneru hostel washroom around 3 pm. While a section of students and political party members alleged that it was unemployment and frustration over the Telangana government's delay in releasing a job notification that drove Murali to his death, others attributed it to depression and examination pressure.
On Monday morning, the OU resembled a fortress with police beefing up security around the campus. From early morning, police barricaded the NCC gate restricting vehicular movement to and from the varsity.
Cops patrol campus, classes suspended.
According to police officials, the agitators, apart from sloganeering, also damaged several CCTV cameras, electricity poles and furniture during their 12-hour protest, from 3 pm on Sunday and refused to allow either the police or the university officials to bring the body down for autopsy. 'They blocked our way till 2.30 am. Many of them went up to the hostel terrace and start throwing chairs and tables at our officers that injured some of them. When the situation went out of hand, we decided to barge into the hostel and bring the body down,' said Ashok Reddy, investigating officer for the case.
