Special counsel for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Deepak Salvi is seeking death sentence which is the maximum punishment for four of the five convicts including gangster Mustafa Dossa, Feroze Khan, Karimullah Khan and Taher Merchant.
While the maximum sentence against Riyaz Siddqui, convicted under the lesser charge of abetting and aiding terrorism is life imprisonment, the quantum of the sentence the CBI will seek against Salem is a grey area in light of the undertaking given to Portugal at the time of his extradition in 2005. The defence had said that he cannot be sentenced to more than 25 years in jail.
After the prosecution's submission, the judge adjourned the arguments for quantum of sentence on Tuesday. The sentence will be pronounced after both the prosecution and defence complete their arguments. And the hearing on the quantum of punishment may last a few to several days.
